A Call to Live Lives of Significance

Richard Foster persuasively argues that Money, Sex and Power are three of the most damaging and destructive forces in the world, but not in and of themselves. All three are given for our pleasure and need, but all three can be corrupted.Three vows help us make sense of these blessings. The Vow of Simplicity (which is a common theme in his other books), The Vow of Fidelity, and The Vow of Service.Richard Foster comes from a Christian background and tradition quite alien to me, not only is he American, but his Quaker roots place him at some variance to my Anglican/Baptist route. Talk of Vows can seem remarkably archaic and out-of-touch, almost legalistic, but Richard Foster is both direct and gentle in his probing of the issues.I have read several times 'A Celebration of Discipline', which along with 'Prayer' are masterpieces, both of which require careful digestion, and constant re-reading. It is no different with this book. You find yourself reading it despite yourself. All too often we tend to read books that agree with our take on the world, agrees with our beliefs/theology.I found myself strongly convicted when reading this book. It is a judge, a guide, a friend, and an encouragement.Richard Foster is the only writer I have encountered who deeply understands the need for practical guidance on how to walk as a Christian. There are many excellent theologians who contribute regularly to our understanding of the things of God, but Richard Foster acts as a guide to help you see how to better 'know' God himself.He never patronises, or condescends, when he could. His style is not dry.I warmly commend this book to all Christians as a welcome guidebook to how one can live with deep integrity in a difficult world.
