By David Whybra
It would be easy to comment offhand that this novel is solely about "the folly of arbitrary command"(book cover 1988 edition), because that is one of the central themes. However, while telling a good adventure story, Michener not only shows this folly (and where it has originated) in his main character, Lord Luton, but also lets his 'minor' characters expose that folly from their perspectives on the behaviour of the Lord and on the almost senseless mission to reach the goldfields of the Klondike by a torturous route. For readers interested in leadership and survival, the book is a good read. For those interested in the psychology, especially that of men (and, surprise! surprise! of women) in pre-modern group dynamics, the book is a goldmine (sorry about the pun!). Through this book, younger readers can comprehend the psychology of how in earlier and not so earlier times (e.g. Vietnam)thousands of young men were sent irresponsibly, ignorantly and pervertedly to their deaths. Sounds dreadful, but it is not so here. Michener has 'the light touch' of a good storyteller, so that the sadness is there, but neither dominant nor possessing. For readers interested in the goldrush, the story tells the true story of another folly - that of greed. In a long additional chapter entitled 'Reflections' which, indeed, does just that, reflecting on many issues in the novel and on its 'making', the author gives us unusual insights into his heart and soul.I have tried to grapple with a complex literary work in this review, and, if you read the novel, you will see how incomplete this review is.

Ripping yarn very well researched and written. The authors characters are larger than life and will have you alternately rooting for them, then wanting to wring their necks. As the author states, this novel is about a subject hardly anyone else has chosen to write about - the Klondike gold rush. It is written in a style reminiscent of the tales told about the British Empire, and tells a story of both the courage and folly of the explorers who, because they are British, refuse to lose face and give in. Even in the face of certain disaster. This book is not very long, and should provide a cracking read to anyone who enjoys adventure novels.
