Whatever value this book may have in relation to understanding KGB operations in the Third World is seriously undermined by the way that the material is presented. Christopher Andrew's anti-communist bias is relentless and rapidly becomes extremely tiresome. Instead of simply referring to the Soviet Union, for example, Andrew refers to "the intolerant Soviet one-party state", Cuban support for revolutionary movements in Africa and Latin America is attributed to "delusions of grandeur" on the part of Fidel Castro, supporters of Cuba are ridiculed as being the victims of "self-administered brain surgery" (the sneering tone even extends to some of the captions to photographs in the book of Soviet leaders and others of whom Andrew disapproves), while The New York Times is denounced for devoting too much space to human rights abuses in Chile and too little to deaths under the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia (Andrew gives a figure of 1.5 million deaths, but provides no details and no source for this figure). This sloppy and biased presentation is pervasive throughout the book. The dustjacket proclaims Andrew as "the world's leading intelligence scholar". This book, unfortunately, is far from scholarly.

Mitrokhin One was a masterpiece. If you want to understand the bedrock upon which Soviet thinking is based. You could do a lot worse than starting here and following his references.
